College of Business Internship Program This project was one done through my Marketing Research (MKTG 425) class, my peers and I put together a proposal, final report, and presentation where we then presented to the client; Megan Connahgan who is the director of the internship program. Through the entirety of this course I improved my skills for public speaking, working in a team, analyzing data, and even presenting data from a statistical software known as SPSS. Below is the project, the first written portion and presentation is from our original group, and the other presentation is the final I was a part of presenting to the client. Enjoy! MIWORKS! WEST CENTRAL This project was one done through my Business to Business Digital Marketing (AIMC 382) class, my peers and I put together a proposal, final report, and presentation where we then presented to the client; MIWORKS! Grand Rapids, MI Floral Expo (March 2019) I had the opportunity alongside two other Ferris students to not only attend, but volunteer at the Michigan Floral Association Expo and competition. This was a neat opportunity to learn how to create beautiful but branded bouquets, use floral as a medium, and learn how to put your own unique mark on the everyday bouquets you see. We worked with Garrett (shown in video) as he and Matt both taught Keri and I how to make this piece with the acrylics! We had never worked with such material before but it is a new skill I now have. The piece itself took 7 hours to create as far as the heating and pinching is concerned but we collected 23 community service hours over the weekend! ComicCon (November 2018 ) Part of my Events Management class allowed us to work an event at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids, November 2018. With this experience however it was more of an eye opening one toward seeking risks and noticing the little things. This event is one where individuals arrive in large costumes, you cannot tell who is who and the security was low. All of the exhibition halls were open to one another with aisles so attendees can get autographs, but with Grand Rapids being a large city where a ton can happen, there were precautions that should have been put in place.

Giving Back to our Communities | My Favorite Hike of them all. One thing that really became a passion of mine especially once I got older is the idea of giving back. Giving back to the community, the university, and to others in need. One of my goals through being a member in Ferris' chapter of the American Marketing Association was to hit the 125 initiative for the University. This is where students get recognized for reaching at least 125 hours of community service, this past year (Spring 2019) I was one of 26 students recognized as well as most involved for AMA, and I am currently taking on the role VP of Community Service for our chapter! Where did it start? It all started when I was 9 or 10 years old. My mom and I went to a soup kitchen back in Lansing roughly 30 minutes from our house. There we served homeless individuals, primarily men, in the area. After that experience my mom explained to me that we volunteered meaning we don't do it for money but to help others out who may not be as fortunate as us. After we served we went to Subway and I found $20 sitting on the ground outside the building and no one claimed it when we walked inside, I turned to my mom and said, "God must have seen what I did today!" and that moment on I knew this is what I wanted to do more often. Not because I found the $20 but because it was a new hike for young Maddy, and others noticed I was able to help even at the age of 9. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES: JESUS SAVES / WOMEN'S AND CHILDREN'S SHELTER / SEND / FOOD DRIVES / FL O RAL EXPO / ETC. SEND Students Empowering Nigerian Development is under KITA (Kato's International Training Academy). This is an organization started by a business professor at my old high school which is when I first got involved. The idea behind this is that students pay $800 in Nigeria to live on campus and learn to play soccer for a chance to get a scholarship to come play at a University in the US!! My team raised roughly $5,000 throughout my time working with SEND. We did can drives, soccer games, silent auctions, and elementary school assemblies to raise money and spread the word. CROP Walk This event is one that has been ran by the American Marketing Association in the past years and my project this year. As the VP of Community Service I took on the role of assisting by reserving rooms, recruitment of Ferris students, and volunteers for set-up and registration. This event had started about 50 years ago but only more recent here in Big Rapids. Spending 35+ hours between the summer months and then again at the start of the year this event has come to the end. Project Starburst Project Starburst is a food pantry that serves the Big Rapids community. Located and partnered with local churches and unloaded food from the truck to the basement. Our chapter is volunteering once a month for the entire year. This is a way for AMA to keep in touch with our community members and make an impact giving back to those who gave first.

WELCOME. I'M HAPPY YOU MADE IT. Welcome to my hike; some hikes can be good, others quite questionable, it is not just about the final destination but how you got there. You get there through stepping stones and landmarks; bridges you cross, paths you take, and the new dirt that surfaced when hikers such as yourself, walked off the beaten path. This site is a reflection of my hike and proof that no hike is the same. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. Madison Tollstam, CTA | Director of Sales |

im·pact /imˈpakt/ 2. have a strong effect on someone or something. "high interest rates have impacted on retail spending" synonyms:affect, influence, have an effect on, make an impression on; "Try to make an impact on a guest today, okay, let's make that a team goal and an individual goal" Making this it's own section simply because it is a separate internship and learning experience! I was pulled aside by a professor of mine after a long day at school. Just getting ready to pack up and leave after her class -- my third class of the day -- she asked me and a few others if we would want to apply to work at X Games Minneapolis for their 2017 summer games. Understanding that my main goal was to eventually work at X Games, I said yes and I have not regretted that decision since! I am going back to my third X Games this summer and taking a small break from the Highlands to work the second year in Minneapolis. I would like to take you through the first two Games I have worked however. The first one as mentioned was in Minneapolis, first year at the venue as well so it was a newer environment for everyone involved. Val is a manager with this student program designed within ESPN, she had just tackled one of the hardest obstacles life has thrown her way and she told us to "Try to make an impact on a guest today, okay, lets make that a team goal and an individual goal" she wanted to hear about it afterwards and gave every team member a bracelet with this word engraved within it as a reminder. I can be pretty shy until I become familiar with the situation at hand so I did not feel as though I made an impact on a guest that summer but that is okay. Aspen was a short six months later and that not only gave me an opportunity to make an impact on a guest but for the guest to make an impact on me. Once that plane landed I felt like I was home. I want to move out west and this kind of made the experience of visiting the west even more thrilling. I met a gentleman about my age who had hit an obstacle, similar to the obstacle Val overcame. But this had hit home and I will tell you why. Sidetracking real quick about two years ago, three years ago this April, my cousin passed away after fighting a long battle with cancer and all I wanted to do was see him happy. Before he passed this cancer spread throughout his whole body making him weak, took his leg and took the last of his energy. This gentleman had the same drive as my cousin and I was ready to get to know him and make sure he had the time of his life. Unlike Minneapolis; I was a student in the hospitality crew working next to students from a university in Colorado and the University of Minneapolis, Ferris students as well! By chance I got to work in the LifeProof suite which was awesome for more than one reason. The first, meeting the family and this young gentleman and the second reason would be networking with my marketing degree in mind. So back to the first reason, he told me about how he use to snowboard every weekend when he was younger and now he is an artist into photography. I built this relationship with not only him but the rest of his family and their guests that assisted with anything they needed. With the events coming to a close the last day was upon us. That morning my advisor came up to me and said, "anything that happens today... it was what you made possible" she then smiled and walked away. As the team was breaking for dinner I had talked with some of the managers including Val. They brought in a swag bag with everything from pieces from our uniform to apparel and items donated from all of our sponsors and then a bracelet with the word "IMPACT" engraved. His mom and I were both crying and she hugged me and thanked me for making everything possible. That is when I realized that I had made an impact on them just as they did on me. Adding on to this, I was able to experience the second year at US Bank Stadium this past july 2018. It was different from last summer with set up and training, this year they seemed to emphasize the learning and training aspect! It was super neat and we got to rotate. This past summer most of my impact came from my fellow students, we seemed to keep an eye out for each other and yes that does include other schools too. We got to work with Johnson Wales from three of their campuses across the States, and Minneapolis students. With returners came new faces and we were able to add to our X Games Family. I worked in the waiver tent on the south entrance, inside the stadium directing guests on the main concourse, and ingress/egress for the transit side of things. Another great summer with the managers as well! I love being able to continue to add to the meaning of X Games. It is now May of 2019, I went back and attended X Games Aspen 2019 and more skills had been acquired and improved. This past winter I went back as a student working on the guest services team and took more of a leadership role on. As an alum, my managers were able to count on me to get some things on site done while teaching new students. This past winter a big change was our sponsors. This year we had Bumble sponsoring Aspen and Lifeproof was not there unfortunately . Our team however just keeps getting stronger and stronger as well as the Games themselves. I know we just expanded to Calgary for 13.5 billion from 2020-2022 which is going to be exciting! Minneapolis 2019 came and went so fast! I carpooled with some girls from the team which was exciting, I always enjoy going for road trips and it makes it even easier when it is with people you enjoy hanging out with! So we got to Minneapolis about 12 pm on the 30th. I may have spent too much money at the Mall of America but that's not what this experience was about. This year I learned the importance of being honest while being part of a team. I learned the importance of being aware while you are around 30,000 strangers on a daily basis, and I learned how to relate to guests on a different level. With the shootings and whatnot happening in so many places and in our own backyard it gets scary as the training gets deeper. This is part of being aware and keeping an eye out for suspicious activity. "In a time like this it comes down to flee or fight and sometimes you have to fight" this was said in our training but it opened my eyes. This summer I was working in guest services (shocker, right!?) it is where I feel like I can make the biggest impact on our guests at the stadium. From starting on the main concourse to working on the floor it was nice to be back. With the position I was in, I had a day and a half to relearn the entire stadium, the field level to the lounges on the third floor to the tickets and what the creds meant per guest. This was a way I could improve my knowledge about the venue which is something good to learn. Knowing the tricks to be able to tell which elevator to take before you get lost or which staircase leads to which section(s). This year was my last summer as a student in the program, I plan on coming back to work in the alumni program and move forward with X! UPDATE: I went Back, if you want to read more, feel free to keep scrolling! Aspen 2020 was a rewarding year out of the previous events. I say this because this is the last large scale event before we went into lockdown and with this being a global event we weren't sure how it would play out in following years. This was also a year where I went out as a Disney manager. I'll explain that a little further, whereas other years I was on either the guest services team or the hospitality team, I took on a role as a student coordinator and assistant to our student program coordinator. This meant I was not in the sea of students from the six or seven other schools but I was leading a team and filled in for our managers when necessary. My favorite event is always going to be the snowmobile competitions, this was a year where one of our managers had to leave and asked me to take over his team of five. These students were working their first event and even though I was their age, I earned their respect and I got to get to know them. These relationships are exciting to make because we all come from different schools and experiences. Aspen 2022 arrived and I went back as part of their content team. This is the most recent event we had worked, a global event post Covid as a team. How awesome is that?! The content team was not like previous years, opposite of what I had been use to while working those events. Instead of standing outside working directly with guests and telling them where to go, we had our own desk space and clipped footage. This was a side of event production I did not know about until recently, as it was just added to our student program I was able to learn a couple new platforms that may be helpful in the future such as Tellyo and Slack. Slack was the communication platform we used for any proofing, and to communicate with our television and broadcasting team as well as our sponsorship team and what needed to be posted for clients. Tellyo was used to clip dirty and clean footage. The dirty footage with graphics were clipped by Emma, a colleague of mine. I clipped the clean footage for each athlete and run. It was tricky considering all athletes who hid their bib number, had to be told apart by what they were wearing but you just have to get creative to track each athlete and run. I Look forward to continuing these connections in the future, the best part ab out this industry is that it is constantly changing and no matter what event you go to and how many times you go, there is always something new to learn. A big thank you to everyone who has made an impact on my experiences and my career thus far. COB Fest As a freshman you either enter into your first year with a major selected and a perfect plan in mind or you are undecided and want to test the waters for potential majors or even concentrations. That was me my freshman year, I wanted to go into Business Administration and eventually open my own company but changed to Hospitality Management with a concentration in Events and something else had occurred. I attended this event known as COB Fest my first year at Ferris State, COB Fest is a festival feel but each booth has representatives from an RSO (registered student organization) showing off a major within the College of Business. This is a fun way to learn about the major with a group of students pursuing the same path as you. I learned more about the Marketing program and started to go to the AMA meetings, this led me to pick up a second major with Marketing and a focus on the Digital aspect of it. Little did I know three years later I would be on the team that runs the event and had the honor of working with the RSO's and other students involved in the 401 Event Management 1 class. The theme for this event was based on a movie where each RSO had to decide on a movie that pertains to what they represented. My role this year was registering and greeting the RSO's as they arrived and assisting the on-site contact with set up and specific information. We had activities based on movies per RSO and with the goal in mind being the interaction between the students and the organizations, tickets with great prizes were being raffled off. Just like every great movie there are individuals to credit, in this case they are our stakeholders and client(s), throughout the event planning process you will gain an idea for who the stakeholders are and defines your client(s) in order to build the profile. This information is following: Stakeholders: President Eisler, Dean, COB Faculty, and finally the COB Students Just like any other event, marketing is crucial especially in our case. Our team relied on the professors and other faculty to promote our event. They decided to give extra credit for those who attended and those who joined the RSO corresponding to their major, creating this incentive encouraged students to show up to our event and helped our team reach our goals and objectives. Speaking of.... When listing out goals and objectives you have to make sure they are SMART [specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time]. Our objectives: increased student retention, increased student involvement, display the value of RSO involvement, and to gather 250 students in attendance. Last year this event accounted for 150 students, this year we had roughly 240 students which shows an increase of almost 60% of student participation. Documents we had created as well as a photo album is posted below! Photo Album The Team Economics RSO COB Attendees The Team 1/20 Master Budget- The master budget provides us with the information we need for the financial side. It states what we have spent and we can divide up between needs and wants. SWOT Analysis- A SWOT analysis allows our team to decide where our strengths and weaknesses, threats and opportunities lie, That way we know how to prepare! The IRC Connector was the perfect location for it as it provided an area for students to arrive and leave when needed according to classes and it had been a central location in the College of Business, fitting our target audience perfectly. Color Me Crimson Homecoming 2k18 Ferris was 4-0 going into the homecoming game against the Ashland Eagles. What better way to celebrate homecoming other than spending it with friends at a tailgate with food, good music, and cornhole? How about meeting up with fellow alumni or even seeing your past professors or those who had entered the department after you graduated? We were able to provide a new experience for the returning bulldogs. Alongside that, the Ferris State Bulldogs played another winning game! The theme for this year was "Color Me Crimson" and our team got to play a part representing our very own College of Business. We wanted to make this booth an attraction, with a lot the size of ours and the amount of tents and RV's housed there, we had the ability to set our tent apart right away --- the red tent. Our team created an experience that gave fellow alumni a welcoming vibe with body marbling, a create your own dawg hot dog bar, and even a giveaway for those returning. We gave away roughly 60 red solo cups with the College of Business logo printed on there, one of a kind. Just like any other event we still recognized our stakeholders, marketing plan, created documents, and highlighted the main points of this event, to begin... Our Stakeholders: This group includes the COB alumni, current COB students, COB faculty, Dean, and our president -- Eisler. Objectives: Part of our objectives include reconnecting and networking with Ferris Business Alumni and getting contact information to keep them up to date with new happenings within the college. This year our marketing consisted of the COB promoting homecoming and trusting the university would promote the event itself as well. Next year we hope to extend the marketing plan to a website or at least create a video that captures this past homecoming to encourage alumni to return for next year! January 2021 - May 2021 ADMIN ASSISTANT Grand Lake Lodge Grand Lake, CO After leaving Devil's Thumb, Grand Lake Lodge and Highway West Vacations welcomed me back with open arms. Receiving a job during our off season has been such a great gift. Being the only employee on property at all times of every day, I work with different teams to draft proposals, make decisions, work on projects, and most importantly, get ready for our upcoming 2021 season. I answer phone calls, give tours to potential bride and grooms, and respond to inquiries on Weddingwire and The Knot. Being the only one there has allowed me to focus on my personal and professional growth in this industry and sharpen communication and leadership skills I did not know I had! To learn more about why I made the conscious decision to leave my dream location, click here! October 2020 - January 2021 SERVER AT HECKS TAVERN Devil's Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa Tabernash, CO With this being my second job in the valley, the Grand Lake Lodge being the first, I was able to adapt to this new location fairly easy as I was not new to this area this time! Still in the Valley, Devil's Thumb had been my goal for the past 3.5 years and now this is a dream come true. I am working as part of the Front of House staff at Heck's Tavern. I trained as a host, backserver, and now I am a server. I have ran food, acted as an expo, and continue to engage with guests and new policies (per COVID). We practice the Forbes tips here, which has been a new type of Food and Bev introduction. Pretty neat how they focus on training here. I'm excited to see where this step takes me. May 2020 - October 2020 SALES & CATERING INTERN Grand Lake Lodge Grand Lake, CO Grand Lake Lodge was more than an eye opener. This was my first job since the start of a pandemic; post graduation. Throughout this internship I sharpened my leadership skills, communication skills, phone etiquette, problem solving skills and so much more while working within a team that just got stronger over the season. While my time here was initially an events internship I did take potential couples on wedding tours to show off our property. Alongside the tours, I worked in our restaurant as a host, expo, server, busser, and occasionally as a supervisor toward the end of the season! May 2019 - August 2019 MANAGEMENT INTERN City Park Grill Petoskey, MI Throughout the internship I have improved my management skills, as far as delegating tasks and handling money to interacting with our guests and solving concerns that arise. This internship allowed me to act quick in responding to specific situations and taught me more about thinking outside the box. I was one of two restaurant management interns and had the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of running an outlet that not only served a couple hundred guests daily, but that allowed me to interact with the community and learn more about working with vendors. We had nights where karaoke was offered and then live music the next night. With that and us being a bar, I had to be cautious of who I allowed in due to the large amount of minors who typically dined with us. May 2018 - August 2018 F&B / EVENTS INTERN Boyne Highlands Harbor Springs, MI This internship taught me how to problem solve, bartend, serve, and the behind the scenes of an event. I managed an event, worked at the Country Club of Boyne, and served the members of the club both daily and on event days. To elaborate, I basically ran the poolside service by myself on the hottest of days with no break even through a double. This environment at the Country Club at least, was a hostile environment. During those days I would check in with the members and their family and then tend to their needs whether it was making a drink or serving them food. Other days were event days, we would set up, tear down, and all the in between, getting to know different groups and some cool people. The best part was managing a wedding and there is more about that in my personal blog. Click here to read about that experience! July 2017-January 2022 ESPN X GAMES STUDENT INTERN & COORDINATOR ESPN - Disney Minneapolis, MN Aspen, CO This mini internship is what introduced me to large scale events and the behind the scenes. I got involved with X Games through the university I attended. Their student program was broken into three teams, roughly 5 to 20 students per team and then a few days of training. I began on the guest services team, assisting guests within vendor row. My second event with the student program, I was part of the hospitality team. We served our XIP guests and some vendors while the competitions took place right next to them. This was the year I got to work with LifeProof and create a couple unforgettable connections. I continued on the guest services team as I was able to interact with guests more this way. My most recent event with them however, I took on the role of assistant to our student coordinator. I assisted with booking rooms, travel plans, training, and ended up having a team of my own for our first snowmobile/snow bike competition. This really taught me that making an impact on a guest will enhance their experience. January 2015 - August 2017 CREW MEMBER Arby's Fast Food Mason, MI This was my first "real" job in the industry. I learned the importance of training, policies, supervising, cash handling, and so on. I started when I was 16 years old and being a minor was somewhat difficult. I learned how to work with difficult guests and problem solve which then was something I could carry with me and improve upon with new experiences! These have benefited me in my future and with my personal goals of giving back. My extracurriculars are as follows; 1. Youth In Government: I participated in YIG Michigan when I was a junior in high school. I was able to participate in the YIG conference and resent my bill, answering questions, in attempt to make it Michigan law! Unfortunately it was one vote shy of the Senate after passing in the House of Representatives but I got to see the process, and improve upon the bill throughout my time there. 2. Softball: I was on the team in high school for three years, two of the three I acted as a captain which taught me not just teamwork, but what it took to be a leader. 3. Honors Program E-Board: For the first two years of my time at Ferris State University, I was accepted into the honors program. I dropped it due to personal reasons however I was part of the E-Board during the time. This allowed me to take on my first leadership role at FSU and I got to participate in unique events that helped new students feel welcomed at a new place. 4. Hospitality Management Student Association (HMSA): I joined on and off throughout college, I prioritized a different student organization over this one as it was a touch and go association. I volunteered with this group in order to complete the 125 hour initiative. With this group I volunteered at; Light Up the Night, International Wine, Beer, and Food Festival (IWBFF), and ComicCon. 5. American Marketing Association: I held this one up on a pedestal. This was an RSO I joined after picking up my marketing degree in my sophomore year of Ferris. I volunteered with AMA for countless events such as ComicCon, IWBFF, Adopt-A-Highway, Adopt-A-Campus, Safe Ride, and so much more! I accomplished over 350+ hours of community service throughout my time at Ferris and continue to look for ways to give back today. I was also one of 25 other students whom received a certificate and medallion for completing the 125 hour initiative in front of our student organizations and student body. Being in AMA gave me the chance to take on an E-Board position as well where I was nominated and then elected to be VP of Community Service and I built on leadership skills and writing skills. We as a chapter are required to create goals and at the end of the year or "term" we create a report before the conference in New Orleans. We won top chapter numerous years in a row and received national recognition. 6. Committee on Inclusions: This was a committee on campus made up of eight great professors and the assistant Dean of the College of Business; the college I represented as a student. the academic year of 2019-2020 I acted as the first student representative on the board! This was an honor as I was able to prove myself and make myself known. I attended meetings pre and post COVID, assisted with the event that took place in September 2019, and helped plan the following 2020 event. Through numerous zoom meetings alongside early mornings and late night planning we had elected a new student to the committee to take my place once I had graduated. It was a great experience and I wouldn't have traded it for anything. City Park Grill This places holds a special spot in my heart. The history behind it is ongoing, and it was my first management position. I learned how to delegate tasks, work through guest concerns, run an event with little to know information at all, and adapt to uncomfortable situations while handling difficult situations. Long days and late nights are worth it with this one, karaoke and live mnusic on the weekends and nothing is better than watching the Petoskey Sunset over te lake across the street.
